Government sets up Committee to probe Akosombo Dam Spillage and flooding impact

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has inaugurated a five-member committee to investigate the issues arising from the flooding caused by the spillage of the Akosombo Dam in September 2023. 

This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to managing the environmental impact and ensuring the safety and livelihoods of affected communities.

The committee, chaired by Ing. Kirk Koffi, has been tasked with examining the events leading to the spillage, assessing the response to the flooding, identifying affected areas, and evaluating the challenges encountered. Additionally, it will review strategies adopted to mitigate the impact and propose both immediate and long-term solutions.

During the inauguration, Hon. Jinapor stressed the importance of a coordinated response to effectively address the devastation caused by the flooding. He raised the issue of compensation for victims, stating, “If there ought to be compensation, how does the Government go about it?”

He further highlighted the need for sustainable flood management strategies to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The Minister called on key stakeholders, including local government officials, community leaders, and environmental experts, to provide the committee with relevant information to support its work. He also assured the committee of his full support to ensure they carry out their assignment effectively.

The Chairman of the committee, Ing. Kirk Koffi, expressed gratitude to the Minister for the opportunity to undertake such an important task. He assured the government of the committee’s commitment to delivering on its mandate within the stipulated timeframe.

Other members of the committee include Mr. Kwame Jantuah, Ing. Kofi Ellis, Ing. Kwaku Akosa, and Ms. Georgette Emefa Fugah, Esq. (Secretary).

The formation of this committee reflects a proactive approach by the government in addressing the effects of the Akosombo Dam spillage. It demonstrates a dedication to improving the living conditions of affected communities and enhancing future flood preparedness measures.

The committee has been given a one-month deadline to complete its work and present its findings.
