Political Scientist and Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has expressed strong optimism that Ghana can achieve its development goals if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government maintains its current trajectory.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Dr Asah-Asante commended the government’s early achievements while emphasising the need for steadfast focus and commitment to ensure the country reaches its intended destination.
“I am hopeful, and I have no doubt in my mind that this government has started well,” Dr Asah-Asante remarked.
“I hope and pray that they remain afloat and deliver on all the promises made to the people. From the little that is happening, there is hope. If they stay on course, we will reach our destination.”
Directing his message to President John Dramani Mahama, Dr Asah-Asante urged the administration to prioritise economic restructuring and industrialisation as cornerstones of its Reset Agenda.
“Mr President, economists and financial analysts have long stressed the urgent need to restructure Ghana’s economy to create opportunities and meaningful employment so that people can earn a decent living. I fully support this view and urge you to place it at the heart of your Reset Agenda,” he said.
He further highlighted the importance of leaving a lasting legacy rooted in industrial development.
“You must not leave office without establishing a robust and sustainable industry. Industrialisation is widely recognised as the key driver of economic transformation, and it should be part of your enduring legacy, not an industry that fizzles out after your tenure, but one that thrives and creates lasting jobs for Ghanaians.”
Drawing attention to Ghana’s rich agricultural resources, Dr Asah-Asante spoke of the untapped potential for value addition and job creation.
“Consider the abundant crops and fruits we cultivate. Can’t we process these, add value, and generate employment? During former President Kufuor’s tenure, he was introduced to 14 different products derived from cocoa. I believe initiatives like these can ignite new industries.”
He believes with a sustained focus on economic restructuring and industrialisation, the nation can secure lasting progress and build a strong legacy.
He made a heartfelt appeal to the President: “Mr President, this must form part of your legacy. That is my message to you.”
